Retired Local Soldier Writes Pilot Episode for Television Series

Draws stories from his and other Soldiers’ wartime experiences

Murfreesboro, TN— Tuesday, March 12 A local Army National Guard Soldier today put the finishing touches to the pilot episode of a military-themed television series that he hopes a production company will produce for broadcast.

“This is a military situation-comedy… a ‘dramady.’” said Jim Boyd, a recently retired, twenty-five-year military member. The website promoting Boyd’s work describes the screenplay DEPLOYED! as when “Chaos and hilarity ensue when an Army National Guard Public Affairs unit is suddenly called to Active Duty... ripped from civilian life and deployed to a tropical combat zone!”

Ready for pick-up

Boyd is ready if the pilot episode, the first episode used to sell the series, is picked up and more episodes are ordered for production.

“The pilot is an hour long,” said Boyd. “I have the bones of eighteen other episodes and the hour-long season finale. I’ve already produced the show’s opening credits and put them online, as a test. You can see the opening now if you go to”

Boyd draws inspiration from his own and his comrades’ real-life adventures... and from his growing up watching sictoms of the past. “When I write, I can feel the strains of all my favorite shows in DEPLOYED!  It’s a military sitcom, but there’s style  and theme elements of I Dream of Jeannie, Hogan’s Heroes, M*A*S*H, Gilligan’s Island, McHale’s Navy, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Andy Griffith Show...” Boyd explained. “Even some of the Robin Williams movie, Good Morning, Vietnam! is in there. If you watch closely enough, you’ll see elements of all of those classic shows in DEPLOYED!

First ‘Table Read’ scheduled

“The pilot’s first ‘table-read,’ where actors will sit around a table and read elements of the script out loud, is scheduled for Tuesday, next week.” Boyd said. “Using a table-read helps me polish dialogue and fine tune jokes and plot points. This table read will also serve as an audition of sorts if the series is picked up by a production company.” According to Boyd, the table read is an open call for trained or untrained talent to read for charter parts in the show.

Striving for an Emmy

Boyd, an Emmy Award winning screen writer hopes his efforts on this project earn him another of the prestigious awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. “Maybe I’m being greedy,” Boyd confessed. “But I feel I need to earn another Emmy just to prove that the first one wasn’t a fluke. I believe that DEPLOYED! will do the trick quite nicely!!”
